THE LIVE MIXTAPE

We are excited to announce The Live Mixtape, a program that brings together established and emerging prairie hip hop and R & B artists. Through collaboration, conversation and performances, the artists will reflect on the development of a vibrant music culture that explores the specificities and complexities of place, inherited histories of the region and various prairie experiences.
Join us on April 15, 7 PM to see a performance of new works by guest artists, concluding with a 30-minute solo set by Cadence Weapon, winner of the 2021 Polaris Music Prize. Odario and Ofield will provide the afterparty soundtrack as you dance the night away.
Tickets are $25 for members, $40 for non-members. For community groups, please contact the Remai Modern directly for complimentary tickets.
The Live Mixtape is conceived and organized by emcee, educator and hip hop workshop facilitator, Elliot Walsh (Nestor Wynrush). First presented in Winnipeg, Walsh has worked in collaboration with Remai Modern to present a new iteration featuring guest artists Cadence Weapon, Odario, Winnipeg Poet Laureate Chimwemwe Undi, Andrew.O, and Marisolle Negash. Local artists include Eekwol, ZHE the Free, The Northwest Kid, Katie Tupper and Chaps with production by Factor Chandelier, Rove, 2oolman and Kimmortal.
Live Mixtape is presented in collaboration with Trinnipeg & @synonymartconsultation, Winnipeg.

The event is about creation, mentorship and building a broader network amongst artists with varying levels of experience and genres. It is inspired by the words of bell hooks and Louis Riel. What is the role of the artists when it comes to community? How can we affect change? How can we encourage conversation? Love as a verb is the only action containing unwilting patience, dedication, care, joy, vulnerability, intimacy, grief, honesty and hope that organically compels a reaction. Live Mixtape is about the performers as the conduits and prisms of that verb's many shades.
This is the second iteration of this event. On a hot July evening in 2018, at a sold out venue, over 20 artists met and performed 7 original songs exploring the idea of "Home". 6 of the 7 songs existed only for that night. One was revisited, then recorded and professionally released by two artists that had never worked together previous to that evening ( Len Bowen & E.GG). It also led to an artist working with a label he would have never worked with unless he was a part of the Live Mixtape project.
